Scarista Beach, Isle of Harris

The west coast of the Isle of Harris is the edge of the old world. The wind blowing in the face has passed over North Atlantic icebergs on its way to the Outer Hebrides. The next stop westward is 3’000 kilometers away with a lot of water in between, a route has been sailed by the Vikings about 1000 years ago.

Below is a photo taken on a small beach on the west coach of the Isle of Harris with a view to Taransay island.

The Isle of Harris West coast has beaches with the finest sand, and mountains lie in the North towards Lewis. In contrast, part of the island has a moonlike appearance. A sequence of the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey” by Stanley Kubrick has been filmed there in 1968.
