The Stelvio Pass (2757 m) in northern Italy is the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps, and the second highest in the Alpsf. It connects the South Tyrol with the Veltlin in Lombardia in Italy and is only 200 meters from the Swiss border. The original road was built in 1820–25 by the Austrian Empire. The seventy-five hairpin turns cover an elevation gain of  1871 meters.
