Virunga Photobook

Treated myself to a one-off fabric cover, hardback photobook with leporello binding. Book is 28×19 cm with 72 pages and contains black & white photographs from the Virunga mountains in Congo and Rwanda taken in 2014 to 2016. Cargo bikes in Rwanda

Bicycles often mix spare parts of different brands. This chainring incorporates the manufacturer's brand name Phoenix, a large Chinese company exporting bicycles since the 1960s.

Cargo bicycles are widely used for the transportation of goods and passengers in Rwanda – the land of thousand hills. For a cyclist, these hills make riding strenuous as there is hardly ever a flat stretch of road. Many riders of Team Rwanda, the cycling team based in Ruhengeri, have started as taxi or cargo bikers.

Le Petit Barrier

Left: Early morning in a village near Rubona in Rwanda. Right: Petit Barrier: A tricycle carries goods over the border between Gisenyi and Goma.

In a cloud of smoke and dust sits volcano Nyiragongo behind the twin towns Goma and Gisenyi at the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. It’s before dawn in the hills at Lake Kivu. On the road winding through small villages, people march in the direction of Gisenyi at the usual brisk Rwandan pace.…… Continue reading Le Petit Barrier

Mountain Gorilla Agashya

Mountain gorilla living in the National Park in the Rwanda Congo border region are on the Red List of Endangered Species due to habitat loss, poaching, disease, and war. Mountain gorillas live in groups of one adult male, the silverback, and a number of females. Silverback gorillas can reach a height of more than two meters and a weight of more than 200 kilograms.

Last Sunday morning I browsed through Sebastião Salgado’s wonderful book ‘Africa’ and discovered a photo of «my» mountain gorilla Agashya in Rwanda. He had visited the mountain gorilla in 2004 – exactly ten years before me. Agashya is the boss of a mountain gorilla family with more than a dozen adult females. When a male mountain gorilla grows up, he has to leave…… Continue reading Mountain Gorilla Agashya

The United Nations headquarters in New York was recently lit up in a call for action to protect the world’s ecosystems and endangered species. The Oceanic Preservation Society – known for the Academy Award-winning documentary The Cove – also chose one of my photos for projection. My photo of Agashya, the mountain gorilla in the Rwandan jungle, was shown…… Continue reading A Mountain Gorilla in New York

Bear and Buffalo

A small straw hut on a field in northwestern Rwanda with Mount Sabinyo on the horizon, an extinct volcano of the Virunga group at the border of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda.

After writing yesterday’s article about wild bears in Switzerland, I was thinking about the recent trip to Rwanda where farmers also face the problem of wild animals invading their land. Buffaloes and elephants from the near jungle ravage and sometimes even kill people. There’s a stone wall at the border of the rain forest, but…… Continue reading Bear and Buffalo

The Golden Monkeys of the Virunga Mountains

Golden monkey on a tree.

Golden Monkeys live in the bamboo forest of the Virunga volcanic mountains of Central Africa (Rwanda, Uganda, and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo). The primates live in groups of up to 30 individuals. They eat leaves and fruit – and they love potatoes as we were able to observe. Just like the mountain gorillas, the…… Continue reading The Golden Monkeys of the Virunga Mountains
